Japan Airlines Flight 1628 UFO Incident

On December 27th 2020, the president of the United States Donald Trump signed a decree into law, promoted by congressional senators, which obliged all defense and intelligence branches to deliver all the information concerning the presence of the so-called unidentified aerial phenomena. (UAPs) Formerly UFOs

Less than 2 weeks later on January 7th, in an unexpected move, the central intelligence agency was the first organization to comply with the order. 

Through the civil organization the black vault, the CIA published an extensive archive of more than three thousand documents related to extraordinary events reported in different countries, as well as in the United States. 

This is the first in a series of articles in which we will examine the content of these recently released archives, and reveal details of the reports which clearly show the decades of involvement, and enormous interest that the CIA has had in the UFO phenomenon.

The first declassified file examined details a dangerous UFO encounter, which was widely publicized in the media, albeit briefly, at the time. 

However, as the official declassification of this incident by the CIA reveals, we now know that this was in fact a real event, which was investigated at that time.

The file records an incident which happened on the night of November 17th 1986, when flight 1628, a cargo plane owned by Japan air lines, flying the route Iceland to France (On a in-direct Reykjavík to Anchorage section), reported at 17:11 hours, the presence of two unidentified flying objects that were very close to its position. The encounter occurred when the aircraft was flying above Anchorage, Alaska. 

In the flight cabin was Captain Kenju Terauchi, together with a first officer and a flight engineer. 

The objects came dangerously close and it seemed as if the aircraft was being escorted by the objects. Captain Terauchi then decided to radio the Anchorage air traffic control to ask if there were more planes in the area. The answer from the controller was “negative”.

After a few moments Captain Terauchi and his crew were now all observing that the two objects were less than one kilometer away, and were heading directly towards them on a collision course.

Despite the close proximity of these mysterious objects, the Anchorage air traffic controller was still unable to detect the intruders on his radar. So he decided to contact the nearby Elmedorf military base to report the situation, and ask about the possibility that any military aircraft were flying in the area. The answer was “negative”, so the controller asked if the objects appeared on the more sensitive military radars.

Upon checking, the military officer confirmed that he had managed to register a weak signal from another object, only now, it was behind the Japanese aircraft. Captain Terauchi is immediately informed, but he and his crew continue to observe the phenomenon head-on. 

Shortly after however, it was established that the aircraft in fact had unknown traffic both in front and behind. Anchorage air traffic control asked the captain if he required the support of the air force to intercept the intruders, and at that very moment the cabin of the plane was illuminated by a blinding light, startling the crew. The declassified report contains subsequent testimony from Captain Terauchi, which states that this bright light was also accompanied by an intense heat.

The important thing to point out here is that these recently declassified documents of the CIA faithfully relate the details of this extraordinary event.

However, the surprises contained in this report do not end there. 

At one point Captain Terauchi, turned to look outside to the left of the plane, and then observed a huge object, which he described later as looking like a kind of walnut that measured the equivalent of two aircraft carriers! The object had positioned itself right next to his aircraft. Faced with the danger that this represented, the captain requested an altitude change in order to avoid a possible collision. 

Air traffic control immediately authorized him to ascend to 35,000 feet. But upon receiving this order, the captain looked out of the window again, and to his surprise the colossal object had disappeared. The crew had a moment of relief, but unfortunately it was short lived, as with another look outside, he again observed the giant craft flying next to him . 

At that point air traffic control asked captain Terauchi to perform an extraordinary maneuver, in which he would have to fly around the object 360 degrees in order to try to identify the visitor. But once again, just as the captain was preparing for this move, the UFO completely disappeared.

In the CIA documents, it is clear that the agency investigated this matter in a very particular and detailed way. The official investigation of these events began quickly, and the case was reported to the media. Captain Kenju Terauchi gave several televised interviews, where he narrated his experience. However, many people believe that he was subsequently silenced, as he soon disappeared from the media spotlight. All of these events and the FAA tracking data was also confirmed by John Callahan who was the Division Chief of Accidents and Investigations Branch of the FAA in Washington, DC. In his testimony he described the event that was transcribed onto paper and afterwards how he and anyone who had knowledge of this event were called into a meeting by the CIA. The CIA agents instructed all who had access to this information to bring their reports to them and this was confiscated. However, John Callahan knowing that this was a very significant event in aviation history, kept his copy of the FAA data and shared this with Dr. Stephen Greer’s Disclosure project in the early 2000s.

Thirty five years after this extraordinary event, the Central Intelligence Agency has presented this case file in the first days of January 2021. A fact which itself reveals that the agency showed a very particular interest in this remarkable encounter. What else do they know about the UFO/UAP phenomenon?
